Physical Characteristics: Amethyst belongs to the quartz family, a silicon dioxide. Hardness of 7. Color is derived from iron and aluminum in trace amounts, as well as some form of natural or man-made irradiation. Some of these have Ametrine and/or white Quartz mixed in with the Amethyst. These pieces are clusters of Amethyst crystals, also known as a druzy formation.
Metaphysical Properties: Amethyst is a stone of protection and cleansing. It is a stone of royalty and therefore has been used as a prosperity stone. It is said to have been one of the stones of the breastplate of the High Priest of the Israelites.
